Issue:
September 2011
Welcome to the September's edition of 2020's Investor Intelligence newsletter.
The extreme volatility of the world’s share markets continues with fear dominating most investors’ behaviour last month.
In this month's newsletter we include insights from some of history’s greatest investment minds and commentary by Michael Lannon on what type of behaviour is required to be a successful investor in this environment.

Market volatility diverted attention from company earnings
|
 |
|
The S&P/ASX 200 Accumulation Index declined by 1.9% in August, but this outcome masked an extraordinary level of volatility in the domestic share market. The Index traded in a range of nearly 20% during the month, reflecting the fragility of investor confidence in financial markets. The extreme level of market volatility in August diverted attention away from company earnings data, which was released for the period ending 30 June 2011.

Fear continues to dominate investor behaviour

|
Despite advisers and fund companies doing their best to reassure nervous investors that markets will recover, the media is doing its best to keep people focused on the short term gyrations with daily headlines boldly quantifying the value that has been lost.

Can stock markets crash to much lower levels from here? They sure indeed can, especially if we take guidance from the panic driven events in the first two weeks of August. But one would have to have a very dire view on the world in the years ahead to write off the possibility that troughs will still be followed by rallies, even if today we don't know when, why or how this might occur.
