February 2009

Investor Intelligence

Welcome to Investor Intelligence for February 2009

The latter half of 2008 was very quiet in terms of new investment products, with many fund managers cancelling or delaying new product offerings so many investors may welcome the familiar investments that will again be available in the lead up to the end of the financial year. Popular structured investments with capital protection and/or the ability to borrow 100% the investment amount from fund managers including Man Investments, Macquarie, Perpetual and INstreet will be available in the coming months with the usual 100% commission rebate from 2020 DIRECTINVEST.

Investment opportunities already available include the 34th fund in the Man OM-IP series - Man OM-IP AHL - which accesses the famed AHL Diversified Program and its track record of generating returns in volatile markets^ with a Capital Guarantee at maturity from NAB. Many agribusiness investment projects which entitle investors to an upfront tax deduction for the amount invested are also open for investment. Both forestry and non-forestry projects will be available this year following the Federal Court's favourable ruling on the Non-Forestry Test Case which provides tax certainty for non-forestry agribusiness investors.

2020 DIRECTINVEST always endeavour to provide investors with the latest opportunities and we will make each new offering available on our website as each investment opens.

Despite a positive first week of the new-year, offshore events and the slowing domestic economy saw Australian share prices fall in January. The All Ordinaries index fell 5.0% to be down 39.0% over 12 months.

It wasn’t all bad news over January with the defensive sectors, healthcare (+6.1%) and telecoms (+0.1%) rising. The weaker Australian dollar and relatively defensive earnings streams saw a number of healthcare companies perform well.

If you're over 55 and still working

The key to maximising the benefits of a Transition to Retirement (TTR) strategy is awareness of its availability, how to get the most out of it and most importantly taking the correct action. Keep in mind that with the restrictions on the amounts you can contribute into superannuation the earlier you implement a TTR strategy the greater the potential tax savings. This month's education looks at using a TTR strategy leading up to your retirement with an article by Russell Investment called "Don't Get Caught Short in Retirement".
