Self managed super funds (also known as DIY superannuation) enjoy the same tax concessions as a public offer superannuation fund so long as the fund complies with super law. Depending on your situation, self managed super will allow you to take full control of your super and access a greater variety of direct investment options not normally available through a public offer super fund.

Advantages managing your own super:
  • Greater control over your super and what you invest in (subject to meeting super rules).
  • More investment choice such as shares, managed funds and direct property.
  • Inclusion of up to 4 members as individual trustees  or alternatively can act as the directors of a corporate trustee of your super fund.
  • Potential cost savings when you have a substantial super balance (usually more than $300,000).
  • Possibility of borrowing to invest in certain assets.
When running your own super fund, as a trustee you need to adhere to super and tax laws in what is a complex and ever-changing area. It's important to have access to professional services and resources to help you access the full potential of a DIY super fund. We recommend using a specialist self-managed-super fund administrator to help take the hassle out of administering your self-managed super fund so you can focus on investing and implementing your financial strategies.
